GYNAECOMASTIA MELBOURNE

Gynaecomastia is defined as abnormal breast tissue growth in males. This is characterised by excess localised fat, excess glandular tissue development or a combination of both. It may affect one breast or both breasts. There are three stages of life where gynaecomastia is more common and these relate to periods of peak hormonal changes – neonatal, puberty and older adulthood. This can cause physical discomfort.  

Gynaecomastia can be caused by certain medical conditions or be secondary to drugs, therefore it is important to address the underlying causes of gynaecomastia. While exercise and diet may help to reduce the fatty tissue, many men may not respond and surgery may be an option. In severe cases, the breast tissue may cause the breast to sag and stretch the areola. In these cases, the position and size of the areola can be surgically improved and the excess skin can be reduced.

What is involved in gynaecomastia surgery?

Gynaecomastia surgery is performed with either liposuction, excision or a combination of both. It is performed under general anaesthetic. The procedure takes around 2 to 3 hours to complete.

During the surgery, Dr Sally Ng will make a small incision along the areola where the excess tissue is located. The excess tissue will either be removed by liposuction or excision. This may be combined with skin excision as well.  

After surgery, you may experience some swelling and bruise around the chest area. This is normal and should subside within a few weeks. You will need to wear a compression garment for the weeks following surgery.
