Burns

After Surgery Care

Following the instructions given to you by Dr Sally is the most critical part to achieving the best possible outcome. As different surgical procedures are performed from person to person, the post-operative care required to ensure high quality results differs on a case-by-case basis.

Generally, skin grafts require a dressing to keep them in place for 3-5 days to prevent any movement. The dressing helps the skin graft “stick” to the wound and begin to heal. After scar release surgery on the limbs, however, you may need a larger dressing that incorporates a plaster splint for support.

You will need follow-up visits after your surgery to track the healing process, and there may be stitches to remove at these visits. Additional physical or occupational therapy may be required in the weeks and months following surgery to ensure as much function as possible returns. This may involve the use of splints or casts, as well as exercises you perform at home or during post-operative follow up visits.

Is surgical burn scar revision right for me?

Reconstructive burn surgery may be a viable option for you depending on your circumstances, and the surgical techniques used in the procedure you receive may be influenced by the availability of skin from the donor site, the types of scars you have, blood supply and more.

You may be able to undergo the procedure as a day operation in small cases, although most larger procedures will require a hospital stay.

Dr Sally Ng and her team will be able to determine what the best course of action is for you and your burn wounds to achieve the best functional and aesthetic plastic surgery results.
