Scar Revision Surgery Melbourne

Scar is inevitable with any trauma or surgery. A scar can take up to 12 to 18 months to mature. Whilst most scars will become less visible with time, some scars remain visible and can cause pain and discomfort. 

The main problems associated with scars include: 

• Discolouration and surface irregularity –  these scars do not cause discomfort but the appearance is obvious due to differences to the surrounding skin tone and texture. Examples of these include acne scar or abrasions that heal without surgical intervention 
• Hypertrophic scars – these scars are thick, raised, red and cause pain and itch. They can be hyperpigmented (dark) or hypopigmented (light)
• Keloids – these scars are larger than hypertrophic scar and tend to extend beyond the original wound. They are often itchy. They are common on the ears, shoulders and chest wall. 
• Contractures – these scars restrict movement due to skin and underlying tissue that pull together during healing. This is common after major insults such as burns. Contracture also forms where a wound crosses a joint, restricting movement of the fingers, elbows, knees or neck. 

What is scar reconstruction procedure and surgery?

Scar reconstruction surgery aims to improve the appearance of a scar. Before embarking on any intervention, it is important to analyse the scar and identify what needs to be addressed. It may be primarily related to the texture or pigmentation, or it may be causing physical pain and itching. In some circumstances, the scar may be affecting the function if it is across a joint or in a body part that restricts mobility. 

Various factors will determine whether scar revision surgery would be worth it for you including the type of scar, its location and size, your medical history and your expectations.

There are many interventions that can be used to improve a scar. These range from topical treatment such as gel, tapes and compression garments. Other more invasive non-surgical options include dermabrasion, intense pulsed light and carbon dioxide laser resurfacing. 

Advanced surgical techniques include scar revision and tissue rearrangements with local tissue or tissue from distant body sites. Artificial dermal substitutes are also increasingly used in combination with skin grafts to resurface larger areas of scarring. Tissue expansion can also be used to resurface more complex areas.
