Gynaecomastia

During your gynaecomastia consultation

During your gynaecomastia consultation, Dr Sally Ng will go through your medical history and assess your condition to establish if you are a suitable candidate for the surgery. She will perform some blood tests and other investigations to determine if there is an underlying cause for the gynaecomastia. She may also refer you to see an endocrinologist if she suspects there is an underlying hormonal cause for your gynaecomastia.

Once medical causes are excluded, she will then explain the surgical procedure that will address your concern.

Leading up to the surgery, you will be provided with a post-operative care plan, which will include instructions on how to care for your wound and when to return for your follow up appointment. It is important that you follow all of the instructions provided to you, in order to ensure a smooth and speedy recovery.

What are the potential risks of gynaecomastia?

All invasive surgical procedures carry risks and will be discussed during your consultation. Potential risks associated with male breast reduction surgery can include:

  • Bleeding or infection
  • Fluid accumulation at operative site
  • Potential partial or total loss of nipple and areola especially in large volume reduction
  • Changes in nipple sensation
  • Asymmetry of the breasts, potentially posing a revision surgery.
  • Scarring. This is inevitable with any surgical procedure.
