About Breast Reconstruction Surgery

In Australia, the majority of breast reconstruction is performed in the setting of breast cancer treatment. While some women may not be concerned by the loss of their natural breast appearance, it is important that each breast cancer patient is offered the opportunity to explore and discuss the reconstructive option. 

The timing of reconstructive breast surgery will depend on your unique circumstances. For some women, for instance, you may be able to undergo a reconstructive procedure at the same time as a mastectomy. For others, the reconstruction may be delayed after the completion of their cancer treatment. 

There are two main types of reconstructions: implant based reconstruction or flap reconstruction. 

Implant based reconstruction relies on the use of a breast implant to create a new breast mould. In some circumstances, a temporary device known as a tissue expander is placed in the breast to create a pocket before the definitive placement of the breast implant. In other cases, the definitive implant can be placed directly at the time of the mastectomy (direct to implant). Acellular dermal matrix products or titanium mesh are often used to provide a lower pole support for the implant. 

Flap reconstruction uses the patient’s own tissue from other parts of the body to form a new breast. The most common sites to harvest the tissue include the abdomen, back, inner thighs and occasionally from the buttock. Flap surgery is a complex operation and the majority will require connection of the donor tissue to the blood vessels on the chest wall.
