Choosing the Right Breast Implant
There are two types of breast implants:
Saline Gel Implants
Saline implants are silicone shells filled with sterile salt water (saline). Some are pre-filled and others are filled during the implant operation. If the shell leaks, the implant will collapse and the saline will be absorbed by the body.
Silicone Gel Implants
Silicone implants are silicone shells filled with an elastic gel that feels much like natural breast tissue. If the implants leak, the gel may remain within the implant shell, or escape into the scar capsule in most cases. The implant will not collapse. The silicone implant is the predominant implant used worldwide as it feels much like natural breast tissue with minimal rippling.
In terms of the surface texture, implants can be classified into smooth, microtextured and textured breast implants. In recent years, research has shown that textured implants have the potential to support a higher rate of bacterial growth and have been implicated as a potential aetiology for breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL). The majority of implants used are either smooth or micro-textured.
In terms of shape, implants can be classified into anatomical (teardrop) and round shapes. Round implants have a tendency to make the breast appear fuller and there is less concern about rotation. Anatomical implants have more projection at the bottom, but if it rotates it may lead to an unusual appearance of the breast.
How do I decide on my breast implant?
During your consultation, Dr Sally will give her professional opinion as to a recommended shape and size that can achieve your desired results. You will also discuss where the incision is placed during surgery.
These discussions and decisions will be discussed in fine detail during your consultation with Dr Sally Ng.
What are the potential risks of breast augmentation?
All invasive surgical procedures carry risks and will be discussed during your consultation. Potential risks associated with breast augmentation surgery can include:
- Surgical risk such as bleeding or infection.
- Blood clots in legs and lungs associated with surgery
- Fluid accumulation around implants after surgery
- Allergic reaction to suture material and dressing
- Changes in nipple or breast sensation
- Poor scarring
- Capsular contracture, where firm scar tissue forms around the implant causing it to lose shape and softness and lead to asymmetry of the breasts
- Future breast imaging difficulties as an implant may hide breast tissue during mammogram
- Breast feeding difficulties including reduced milk supply
- Implant rotation
- Visible rippling to the cleavage
- Implant rupture or deflation
- Granulomas or lumps in local lymph node tissue due to leaking silicone
- Future surgery to manage complications
- Breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL)
