What is the difference between breast lift and breast augmentation?

Breast lift surgery elevates the breast tissue, while breast augmentation enhances the overall size of the breasts.

When it comes to breast surgery, there are a few different procedures that one might consider. Two of the most common cosmetic options are breast lift and breast augmentation. While they both have the goal of improving the appearance of the breasts, they achieve this goal in different ways. So, what is the difference between these two procedures? Read on to find out more about these treatments, and which one may be appropriate for you.

What is the difference between breast lift and breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation is often an ideal option for women who would like larger breasts volume. The procedure enhances the size and shape of the breasts with the use of implants.

Breast lift surgery, on the other hand, aims to address issues such as sagging and loss of volume in the breasts. The surgery is performed to lift and reshape the breast tissue and achieve a more youthful-looking appearance. There is no increase in volume to the breast.

In many cases, breast lift and breast augmentation surgery are combined in order to enhance the overall shape, volume, position and size of the breasts.

What should you consider?

If you are considering a procedure to improve the overall appearance of your breasts, but are not sure which treatment is most appropriate for you, there are a few factors worth considering.

First, you should think about the position of your nipples. If you notice that your nipples point in a downward direction or that they sit below the crease of your breasts, you may be suited to breast lift surgery. Sagging breast tissue, as well as a loss of volume in the breasts, can cause the nipples to shift position or stretch over time, often leading to sagging. A breast lift helps to elevate the breast tissue and also involves the repositioning and/or reshaping of the nipple for a more pleasing aesthetic.

Another factor to consider is the overall volume of your breasts. If you have been through significant weight loss, pregnancy or breastfeeding, your breasts may appear small and deflated. In this case, a combination of breast lift and breast augmentation may be suitable — breast augmentation can help to restore size and volume to your breasts, while a breast lift can address any sagging that you are concerned about.

Finally, you should consider the size of your breasts. If you are dissatisfied with small or asymmetrical breasts, you might consider breast augmentation. Your surgeon will let you know what types of implants are available, and you will be able to choose the size and shape that best suit your aesthetic goals.
