Brachioplasty is the surgical process of removing excess skin and fat in the upper arm.

If the undersides of your upper arms are sagging or appear loose and full due to excess skin and fat, a brachioplasty, also known as arm lift, may be the right procedure right for you.

Many patients develop significant upper arm skin laxity after massive weight loss. To be considered a good candidate, your weight should be relatively stable, be a non-smoker, and not have any medical conditions that impair healing.

About Brachioplasty Surgery

The procedure generally takes 3 to 4 hours under general anaesthesia.

The incision and pattern depend on the amount and location of excess skin to be removed. The scars are generally placed on the inner surface of the arm and may extend from the axilla (armpit) to just above the elbow.

Patients often stay 1 to 2 nights in hospital. Drain tubes may need to stay in for 1 to 2 weeks. You will need to wear compression garments for at least 12 weeks after surgery.

What are the potential risks of brachioplasty?

All invasive surgical procedures carry risks and these will be discussed during your consultation. Potential risks associated with a brachioplasty can include:

Bleeding or infection.
Damage to deeper structure such as nerve, blood vessels and muscle
Fatty tissue under the skin may die (fat necrosis)
Fluid accumulation (seroma)
Numbness or other changes in skin sensation
Poor wound healing
Scarring. This is inevitable with any surgical procedure.
Possibility of revisional surgery.
