Thigh lift surgery involves reducing extra skin and, in some situations, fat to reshape the thighs.

Patients who have lost a significant amount of weight resulting in loose inner thigh tissue are the ideal candidates for a thigh lift. Ageing with loss of skin elasticity can also cause excess tissue laxity in the inner thigh and benefit from a thigh lift.

Thigh lift is not intended strictly for removal of excess fat. Liposuction alone can be used to remove fat deposits if there is very good skin elasticity, and is able to conform to new body contours. In cases of massive weight loss where the elasticity is poor, liposuction and thigh lift techniques are combined to achieve the contouring required.

About Thigh Lift Surgery

This procedure generally takes 3 to 4 hours under general anaesthesia.

The incision and pattern depend on the amount and location of excess skin to be removed. The scars are generally placed on the inner surface of the thigh and may extend from the groin to just above the knee.

Patients often stay 1 to 2 nights in hospital. Drain tubes may need to stay in for 1 to 2 weeks. You will need to wear compression garments for at least 12 weeks.

What are the potential risks of thighplasty?

All invasive surgical procedures carry risks and will be discussed during your consultation. Potential risks associated with a thighplasty can include:

Bleeding or infection.
Fluid accumulation (seroma)
Deep vein thrombosis
Fatty tissue under the skin might die (fat necrosis)
Delayed wound healing
Numbness or changes in skin sensation
Scarring. This is inevitable with any surgical procedure.
Possibility of revisional surgery
Recurrent looseness of skin especially with subsequent further weight change
Skin discolouration and swelling
